These formats can hold similar products, but they use different material, forming and handling processes. Select the pack around the customer task, then confirm the dosing and production route.

Choose a roll-stock sachet when the pack can be formed on the machine

A roll-stock sachet machine unwinds film, forms the pack, meters the product, makes longitudinal and transverse seals and cuts or perforates the finished pack. It is a practical route for flat sample and single-serve formats when the approved film and seal geometry can be produced consistently.

The important variables are finished dimensions, film width and structure, print repeat, forming geometry, product drop, headspace, seal pattern, tear feature, coding and accepted output.

Choose a stick pack when the narrow format is part of the product proposition

A stick pack is not merely a sachet with a different name. The narrow web layout, lane pitch, back-seal position, product path and strip or single-pack discharge create a distinct multi-lane design problem. Dose consistency and seal quality must be checked by lane rather than hidden inside one total average.

Stick packs can be considered for suitable powders, granules and liquids, but product behaviour, fill volume, pack width and opening experience must be proven together.

Choose a premade pouch when the converted feature justifies a different process

A premade-pouch machine handles a pouch that already exists. It must pick, orient, open and hold the pack before filling and sealing. Zippers, spouts, gussets and shaped packs can justify this route, but they also introduce pouch-supply, opening, gripping and feature-protection variables that do not apply to roll-stock sachets.

Do not compare the formats only by nominal speed. Compare the finished customer experience, material supply, changeover, labour, accepted output and quality evidence.

Six-step format decision

  1. Fix the user task: dose, opening, dispensing, reclosure, presentation and disposal.
  2. Approve the finished dimensions and features before choosing the machinery family.
  3. Match the dose system to product behaviour and pack clearance.
  4. Confirm material supply, artwork, registration and sealing evidence.
  5. Define accepted output including normal checks, replenishment and downstream handling.
  6. Trial the real product and production-intent material before final technical approval.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Choosing a pack because an image looks similar while ignoring how it is formed and handled.
  • Assuming one dose system will transfer unchanged between a flat sachet, narrow stick and converted pouch.
  • Comparing headline cycles without defining accepted packs, lane performance and downstream capacity.
  • Leaving tear, code, cut, strip separation or reclosure requirements until tooling is fixed.
  • Testing a substitute film or pouch that does not represent the production material.

Is a stick pack the same as a sachet?

A stick pack is a narrow sachet format, but its lane layout, seal geometry, dosing path and downstream handling make it a distinct machine and tooling decision.

Can the same product use all three formats?

Possibly, but product behaviour, dose, pack clearance, material, opening method and commercial presentation may make one format more practical. Representative trials are needed.

Which format is fastest?

There is no universal answer. Accepted output depends on product, dose, lanes, material, pack features, normal checks, rejects and downstream handling.

Which format gives the most design freedom?

Premade pouches can support converted features such as zippers, spouts, gussets and shapes, while roll-stock formats can be efficient for defined flat sachets and narrow sticks. The feature must justify its process and supply implications.

What samples should be sent before a recommendation?
